Dubbed "The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports," the Kentucky Derby is a famous horse race that is held annually in Louisville, Kentucky on the first Saturday in May. The 2020 Derby will be held on May 2 and will be the 146th installment of the annual race.
Last years installment featured more drama than expected as the first horse to cross the finish line, who also was the betting favorite, Maximum Security was disqualified for interference. Coming out of turn four Maximum Security drifted out of his path and impacted the progress of rival horses War of Will who in turn interfered with Long Range Toddy and Bodexpress. After all the smoke cleared, and a long extensive replay, Maximum Security was penalized and finished 17th while the second place finisher Country House was deemed the 2019 Kentucky Derby winner, and with the 2nd biggest upset ever at 65-1 odds.
This race is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbred horses at a distance of one and a quarter miles. Additionally, the Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the American Triple Crown, followed by the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. Both the Preakness and the Belmont experienced hiatus throughout the late 1800s and early 1990s, respectively, but the Kentucky Derby has taken place every consecutive year since 1875.
